Adults bright silver with yellow and dusky dorsal fin tip. Small juveniles more colorful with yellow over most of the dorsal fin and two vertical black bands over the head. Fins yellow except pectoral translucent. Eyes large, mouth small

Feeds on planktonic food items and benthic organic matter

It is marketed in fresh and dried form. In juvenile stages, it is also kept as an aquarium fish
