More than 90% material passes through 2 mm sieve and the particle density was 0.48 Mg/ m3. pH of the mixture was 8.27 and EC was 1.33 dS/ m. It has 0.13% Nitrogen, 0.19% Phosphorus and 1.54% Potassium content. The concentration of the constituents of the integrated nutrient mixture is finalized based on the pot culture experiments conducted in short duration horticultural crops such as brinjal, tomato and the same was tested in fruit crops in pots. Field experiment proved that, application of one kg Integrated Nutrient mixture (IN mixture) at 3 months after planting improved growth and yield of banana in poor quality red laterite soil. The highest yield (26.32 kg) was recorded in Grand Naine variety treated with IN mixture along with recommended dose of fertilizers.

VEGFAST Technology

The VEGFAST technology is one of the trade mark technology for urban gardening developed by ICAR-Central Potato Research Station, Jalandhar. This promising technology has tremendous scope in the state of Goa, where healthy and fresh vegetables can be grown in the terraces, balconies and rooftops of housing societies, restaurants, hotels and beachfronts. The use of this technology will help the state of Goa to become self-reliant in vegetable productions and reduce its dependence on other states.

Design of site specific greenhouses

Greenhouses are structures in which the environment can be partially or fully controlled to grow crops. The advantages of greenhouses are:

  • The yield may be 10-12 times higher than of out door cultivation depending upon the type of greenhouse, type of crop, environmental control facilities.
  • Reliability of crop increases under greenhouse cultivation
  • Ideally suitable for vegetable and flower crops
  • Year round production of floriculture crops.
  • Off-season production of vegetables and fruit crops.
  • Disease-free and genetically superior transplants can be produced continuously.
  • Efficient utilization of chemicals, pesticides to control pest and diseases.
  • Water requirement of crops very limited and easy to control.
  • Maintenance of stock plants, cultivating grafted plant-lets and micro propagated plant-lets.
  • Hardening of tissue cultured plants
  • Production of quality produce free of blemishes.
  • Most useful in monitoring and controlling the instability of various ecological system.
  • Modern techniques of Hydroponic (Soil less culture); Aeroponics and Nutrient film techniques are possible only under greenhouse cultivation.

Greenhouses have been designed taking into consideration the location of the site, prevailing wind, other environmental conditions, purpose for which it is to be used etc. ICAR-CCARI has competence to evolve such designs and prepare DPR for the same. Also, guidance on various other technologies like hydroponics, roof-top farming etc. can be provided.

Spices, medicinal and aromatic farming

Turmeric production and processing technology

Improved varieties of turmeric (like Prabha, Pratibha, Meghalaya, Selection-1, and Sudarshan) are found promising under agro climatic conditions in Goa for commercial production both as a inter crops in cashew and coconut plantations and also as pure crop in open fields. To process the turmeric fingers are separated from mother rhizomes which are usually kept as seed materials. The fresh turmeric is cured for obtaining dry turmeric for marketing. The rhizomes are collected, cleaned and processed. Processing of Turmeric involves boiling of fresh rhizomes in water, drying and polishing and pulverizing.

Floriculture and Landscaping

Lilium cut flower production

ICAR-CCARI, Goa has standardized technology for the cultivation of Lilium cut flowers under naturally ventilated polyhouse. Cut flowers with good quality flowers along with long stems can be produced under the polyhouse with the required fertigation and plant protection schedule. Under the NHM, farmers can avail a subsidy of up to 50 per cent of the project's cost for making the structure and buying planting material. When the bulbs are harvested, they can be stored and managed properly so they can be used again next year. Farmers can diversify their cropping and enhance their income through the production of Lilium cut flowers.

Protected Cultivation of Anthurium cut flowers

Standardized production technology for cut flower production was initiated at ICAR-CCARI, Goa under a naturally ventilated polyhouse. Anthurium flowers are harvested when the spathe completely unfurls and the spadix is well developed. The development of true flowers on the spadix is also used as a criterion for harvesting the blooms. When one-third of the true flowers on the spadix mature, a change of colour can be observed that moves from base to the tip of the spadix and that is the right stage for harvesting of flowers. Flowers are ready for harvesting after 8-10 months of planting. The average yield is 5-7flowers per plant per year for the initial two years and 10-12 flowers per plant per year from 3 rd year onwards. Varieties identified under Goa conditions are Aymara, Chichas, Ivory, Elan, Jewel.
