On April 25, 2024, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research - Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI) took a significant stride in enhancing cultivable fish seed availability in Goa. Collaborating with the Department of Fisheries Goa, ICAR-CCARI provided  70 kg of high-quality brood fishes (Catla, Rohu, and Common Carp) for seed production purposes. ICAR-CCARI, with its years of experience in aquaculture activities, has been at the forefront of developing breakthrough techniques for both freshwater and brackish water aquaculture. Under its "Mega Seed Project," the institute has been producing seeds of ornamental as well as cultivable fish species. Recognizing the importance of freshwater aquaculture seed production and supply to fish farmers, ICAR-CCARI provided brood stocks of Catla, Rohu, and Common Carp to Directorate of Fisheries, Goa. This collaborative effort ensures that fish farmers have access to high-quality yet affordable seeds, thereby bolstering livelihood opportunities within the state. Shri. Trivesh Mayekar, a Scientist specializing in Fish Genetics and Breeding at ICAR-CCARI, affirmed the quality of the brooders provided. He expressed confidence that these brood fishes would contribute to the production of superior quality seeds, furthering the objectives of sustainable aquaculture practices in Goa. In conclusion, ICAR-CCARI's initiative to provide brood fishes to the Department of Fisheries Goa underscores its commitment to supporting the growth of the aquaculture sector. By ensuring the availability of high-quality fish seeds, this collaboration aims to empower fish farmers and promote economic prosperity in Goa.
